Screenshots

Sometimes during rendering I come across images I just have to take a screenshot from. At other times you won’t see it, because it flashes by so quickly…

Changing speed

A montage of stills from the footage. The stills allow you to choose the images you want, so you can go for the backs, the blurs, … nothing too in-your-face, so the turning can go a little slower. Just adding the right approach to the right picture.

Three-layered

Altough I might feel more comfortable with this approach, the result isn’t as strong. Safe, just to be safe, while this video-project is partly about changing some boundaries for myself. Crossing them all is the other opposite. It’s about the balance between what you’re comfortable with and what you want to be comfortable with.

Full Body, first montage

The face was the focus of the past self portraits, but this new way I’m turning allowed (or made me) turn to the full body. If I want to show all or nothing I have to use all or nothing. All it was.

Again the speed makes sure I don’t have to reveal all (sort of..). It was hard showing it for the first, awkward. Once that first border is crossed, you get over it. And look, it’s on the internet now! (ehh…)

The decomposing of the body is an extra element to distort the body. Even when all three parts come together, the image never really gets to a real life, obvious human (naked) body, my body.

The sounds you hear are from the original recording, which was set to music, and got the same speed changes as the images. That’s what creates the abstract speeding (fast forward-like) sounds. On this one I tried putting over a song too, but together it becomes a bit much. It’s a remix by Jamie xx for ‘My Cloud’ by Gil Scott-Heron (R.I.P.).

Video

I’ve been doing a lot of video stuff the past two months or so. It captures a lot more than the past media i’ve been working in. It pretty much shows all. That’s what I emphasize by filming myself turning and flipping my head all over for several minutes, trying to show it all.

By really speeding up the images it all becomes a bit more distant. The same footage is still all there, but it becomes harder to see it all. It almost turns kind of anonymous again.

Complete Self Portrait in Seven Seconds

Yes, it’s all in here. Because of the zoom and the fast speed, it stays ‘safe’.
